MY WXOERIENCES WITH DIGITALISATION

In 1988, when I was born we have the landline phone. My sister played car games on the computer, that was big and thick. When I was young and friends were the most important thing in a life, I chatted a lot on MSN messenger. My first phone was my mother. I was probably in middle school then.

Digitalization has developed wildy during my lifetime. It´s everyday. It is also a big part of my work home care for the eldery and will play even bigger role in the future.

As the population ages, the role of digitalization in the care of the elderly becomes more prominent. Home care uses for example, a security service, virtual home care and medical robots. In virtual home care, the nurse calls the elderly via a remote connection and can ensure, for example, that medicines are taken on time. With the help of the security service, an elderly person who no longer knows how to use the phone can call himself for help, for example, if he falls or has a sudden illness. A security service employee will alert the nurse to the scene. The elderly can also use the security phone to ask for help with daily activities, such as going to the toilet. The medicine robot is helpful for the elderly who have, for example, memory problems. The medicine robot reminds you to take your medicine and serves the medicine at the right time in medicine bags.

Digitization is helpful in caring for the elderly, but it will never replace human presence and interaction.

DIGITALIZATION CHANGES LIFE AND WORK

We will still need digitization even more in the future due to the demographic structure. The technology will develop more and more and it is already possible to implement it with the help of robotics. Maybe in the future, for example, wounds can be treated mechanically or at least be utilized.

However, I hope that together with the development of digitalization, community spirit will also develop. Many problems would disappear if loneliness were experienced less. Maybe digitization can bring answers to this issue as well?

THE RISKS OF OPEN DIGITAL SOCIETY – DATA PROTECTION

The protection of personal data is considered a fundamental right in the EU. Data protection is important in terms of protecting the customer’s personal data.

GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) was a new thing for me. In the EU, the protection of personal data is considered a fundamental right. In the spring of 2018, the law regulating the processing of personal data, GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation), began to be applied in EU countries.

However, data protection and related permits slow down and complicate the work of a home care nurse. Elderly people in home care are often no longer capable of deciding their own things (memory disorders, etc.), so permission has to be asked from relatives and guardians. Even if the customer gives permission to view the data, the lack of communication between the different porilas data systems can become a problem.

However, it is important that personal information does not get falsified in an open digital society. Data protection reduces data breaches.

SELF EVALUATION

When I started the course, I thought that digital was far from me. But while doing the assignment, I noticed that I use several digital devices in my work and little by little my digital skills have improved even though I am very old fashioned. I noticed that dogitalization is a huge help both in my personal life and in my work. With the help of the Internet, information is close at hand and with the help of smartphones it is easy to communicate with other people. However, everyone has to think about how much of their own time to spend on technology. Nothing can replace human presence and touch.

    Hi!

    I have to say that I like your positive outlook on digitalisation: how you see it as means to lessen loneliness instead of blaming it for making people lonely or isolated. I’m about the same age as you are, and when I was a teenager, most of the friends that I had lived either abroad or in Finland, but far away. So: MSN Messenger was extremely familiar for me as well, and later on IRC as well (not IRC-galleria, but the real thing). I pretty much maintained most of my meaningful relationships via Messenger and made new friends with it as well. If I was born 5 years earlier, I would have been extremely lonely; I was a weird nerd in a smallish village, and I just couldn’t find anyone local that I would have related to. Since then I’ve also found friends face to face, but I still maintain many of my relationships via chatting and video calls. This experience with Messenger and IRC has also been a huge help in my current job. I’ve worked in this company for 2,5 years, and since I mostly work remotely, I’ve visited my office for about 10 times during that time. Despite that, I have managed to build a strong collegial network via Teams and have a strong sense of community ‘in my workplace. I also agree with you: technology can aid us, help us, make our lives easier, but it should not consume us. It all boils down to people and human contact. Teams can offer means for working remotely AND build working relationships, to connect remotely, but it won’t do the actual work for you. And by this work I mean the work that goes to building and maintaining relationships; be it with the client/patient that you work with or the coworker that works with you.

    Technology aids the elderly in their homes as it has become normal for the elderly to stay in their homes at old age instead of nursing home. Your article mentions different kinds of tools for the homes of the elderly and I believe this is an area that will experience a lot of advancement in the future. Digitalisation will not replace real interaction but one day it might aid the elderly who feel lonely.

    Hi Silja! In the future our healthcare system needs more and more new operating models. New operating models will help people staying home. There will be also several things, which need face-to-face connections. How we organize these things in the future, we’ll see.

    Olen samaa mieltä kanssasi siitä että mikään robotti tai etäyhteys ei korvaa aitoa vuorovaikutteista kanssakäymistä vanhustyössä. Sopivassa suhteessa kuitenkin robotiikka ja fyysinen hoitajan läsnäolo täydentävät toisiaan. Näin kotisairaanhoitajana kun olen itsekin, kuvailit hyvin vanhuspuolen ja kotihoidossa käytettyjä välineitä joita on tullut asiakkaidemme käyttöön. Kiitos kuvauksesta.

    Thanks for the interesting blog site. I have often wondering about the challenges of digitization in the care of the elderly. It was interesting to read how it is implementing in elderly care today. I completely agree with you that digitalization can never replace presens of real person -we need each others always! <3
