DIGI SOCIETY

I’m working as open early childhood education teacher in a meeting place for families. Some years ago when I worked in kindergarten, I haven’t really needed digital tools for anything other than marking care times, e-mail, planning and making surveys. Nowadays, I use a lot of digital tools in my work. Social media is my important work tool. In addition, I update information on websites, make advertisements, surveys and analyses, plan and be remotely connected in meetings or trainings.

Due to Corona, the multiple use of digital devices has increased in my work. However, my main task is face-to-face work and early childhood education, where we have genuine interaction with people. In the future, digitization will hopefully enable me to meet in different languages better in my work.
I would hope that software would develop so much that translating speech and written language would be effortless and would enable good face-to-face conversations. It would also be great if the announcements could be easily translated into the necessary languages.
Maybe in the future some of my tasks could be done by robots, so I would have more time for the faceing work. For example, robots could do advertisements, statistics and evaluation of effectiveness.

The challenge of the future and already today may be that people easily stay at home, because digital tools can be used to handle so many things. This can lead to people being even more lonely as genuine encounters decrease. Children’s linguistic development and social skills can be weakened, because it is important to play and work with other children for the development of these skills.

I believe that social media has a bad effect on people’s mental health. I think the power of algorithms is dangerous. In my opinion, it increases, for example, the confrontation of people who think differently. It is important that the effects have been studied. I’m not afraid that digitization will take away jobs. I believe that it can be used to allocate work to other types of tasks. To those that are meaningful.

To be honest, I didn’t remember to know about the 2016 data protection reform before this course. I don’t know how I missed it. So I’m going to find out how it’s taken into account at my workplace. I myself handle very little of our customers’ data. I believe that the data protection reform will strengthen privacy protection and increase the transparency of companies. Companies have an obligation to clearly state what information they collect, how it is used and to whom it is shared. Companies also have a greater responsibility, so I hope this prevents information leaks and abuses. The challenge of the data protection reform may be, for example, higher costs, especially for small companies. The reform may also make innovation work more difficult and increase unnecessary bureaucracy.

I think ChatGPT answers my questions surprisingly well. The problem is that the information is not up to date in the free version. I have used ChatGPT very little yet and I would like to learn to use it more. I believe that it is possible to do a lot of great things with it and its importance is not even fully understood yet. At the same time, I’m also scared of what can be done with it. For example, photos and videos can no longer be trusted because they can be created with the help of artificial intelligence. How can we judge what is true and what is not?

A self evaluation

For me, the biggest lesson in this assignment was the data protection reform and getting to know it in more detail. I have already evaluated the risks and opportunities of an open digital society in the second course. That’s why I didn’t learn much new about it. I feel it’s important to learn more about the use of artificial intelligence, because I still don’t really know how to use it in my own life or in my work life. I think that only by learning to use it yourself, you also learn to evaluate it critically.
