DIGI SOCIETY

Thirty years ago, when I was a child, only few people had internet connection and phone calls were made by landline phone. Nowadays kids are using smartphones and tablets at very young age. Communication has become faster and more efficient with digilization. People´s demands have also increased by digital development, and we expect more and more from the technology. With the help of digilization work, music, transport, travel and communication systems has come more efficient. Digilization has brought us a lot of good, but also people must be more aware of the risks that internet and digilization is bringing to us.

I work as a nurse in neurosurgery ward. I have seen the change of digilization in health care sectors. When I started to work as a registered nurse in 2009, hospitals still had paper fields for patients. Nowadays everything is in electric format and robots have taken a place in operating theatre. Digilization has changed healthcare sector: It is way easier to get correct and the latest information about the patient and the results of the tests. Digilization also challenges us, when it is not working correctly or not co-operating with another patient database.  Maybe in the future different patient databases and surgery robots will co-operate better together and be more effective to save people. The question is: can we trust blindly to machines?

Working in the digital environment demands a new kind of competence from the staff. The Leader must ensure the staff´s sufficient skills and support them in professional development. In the healthcare sectors, patients have been met face-to-face, but for example a video consultation with the doctor or nurse has become more popular. Video calls can improve access to care, reduce healthcare costs and provide satisfaction, but it is not suitable for all situations- we still need normal face-to-face appointments in healthcare. Digilization can also improve the quality of services. In my work unit, patients can give anonymous feedback abot how they experienced the quality of nursing by using a survey on department´s tablet.

It is easy to get information on the internet nowadays and some patients are searching reasons for their symptoms from internet and making their own diagnoses after google search, which also challenges professionals to justify their own actions and decisions more than before. Most of the young people understand how to search for reliable information from the right sources, but elderly people may have challenges with it.

By the digilization people can be more connected to each other’s, but on the other hand maybe it makes us physically lonely? In the future, digital technology will increasingly take part in people’s lives. Maybe in the future all work will be done by digital devices and people will be able to be on vacation most of the year? It is possible that by developing the digilization it will take our jobs (what people are going to do?) How is it going to effect to studies and are some jobs going to disappear.

People are not always aware how much they are sharing data, or they trust too much to digital platforms. Many people are entrusting their personal data with cloud services and braches are daily occurrence. There is also a risk of identity thefts and online bullying. The right to privacy is a part of the 1950 European convention on human rights, European Union has sought to ensure the protection of this right through legislation. Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) compliance helps minimize the risk of data breaches. GDPR is a Europe´s data privacy and security law. The GDPR gives individuals the right to ask organzation to delete their personal data. The change in law protects everyones´s privacy, but it doesen´t provide complete security. It is possible that new laws will be needed as technology develops.

I believe that in the future artificial intelligence robotics will be used more in society. It is important to develop services along with the technology to ensure the best possible benefit. I believe that robot in the future robots will be used more in rehabilitation and assisting heavy patients. In recent years technology has also been used to improve driving safety. Cars have become safer, for example, cars can recognize if the driver is tired, or safety distance between cars is too short. Some of the cars also drive themselves. Many of the digital devices guide us in the right directions nowadays, for example the fitness watch, the Oura-ring and various health applications.  The information that is provided by technology can also become a stress factor, so it is important to recognize if technology turns against itself.

Turing Digitalised working environment-course in I need to deepen my general knowledge of the topic. Part of this course was to create a blog, which is something that I have never done before, so doing it successfully gave me new skills. I also must practice my English writing skills, so I am really looking forward this course.
