DIGI SOCIETY

Digitization in working life

In the 21st century, digitalization has taken a huge leap. Today, there are challenges in working life and in your free time if you do not have the basic skills of using a computer or if you do not improve yourself in terms of these skills. The provision of services for the aging population has largely moved online. I often miss the time when people met face to face and spent time with each other, were present. I hope our young people will notice it soon. A good start is to limit the use of cell phones in schools.

The last few years in working life at the rental housing company have been a big digital leap. Covid-19 gave the need for change. Our customers can make applications, lease agreements, defect reports, terminations and monitor their rental ledger through the application. Before the change, customers visited the office and the paperwork was done face-to-face. The change has taught me a new way of working so that I can identify customers over the phone and speeded up our operations in many different areas.

The digital transformation of working life will continue and employees must study and develop their own skills all the time. Generation X is its own challenge. I believe that working life will have to change when they enter working life. Friends and free time are important to them. However, they have better capabilities for digitalization. This challenges employers, also in terms of management. It is important to maintain authentic, internal leadership.

The effect of the change in working life

Digitization will significantly change our work in the future in terms of simple repetitive work. The changing work environment requires innovative and social intelligence to take advantage of digitalization. This requires more digital skills, such as a basic understanding of the possibilities and limitations of artificial intelligence and the ability to use various applications and tools. In the labor market, on the other hand, flexible transitions must be facilitated. I believe that in the future we will meet fewer customers and we will reduce customer encounters to a minimum. We learn new operating systems and they are connected by interfaces, where information is transferred from one system to another. This reduces errors and speeds up, for example, the sending of electricity and water bills.

The risks of digitization in the future

Cyber risks are also associated with digitization, for example data breaches have become more common. Crime is moving to where consumers and operators go, i.e. online. Investments in information security are required from all operators, companies already operating in the field, companies entering the field (including startups) and consumers. In addition, questions related to information and privacy protection arise when, for example, big data begins to be used. GDPR directive was adopted in 2016. In my work, the challenges of electronic transactions are related to the security of personal data and it is ensured as required by law. It is particularly important that we are a reliable operator and that the customer knows this when signing the rental agreement electronically. The change also affects the operating methods and gives time to develop the company in many different areas.

Self-assessment of learning

In my youth in the 80s, there was no information about such digitalization, but over the decades the change has been enormous. Through my work, I have familiarized myself with information security matters and I have become cautious when doing business online.

In my current job, it has been great to develop the company and see a huge digital leap. That’s why I went to Savonia to study business development. Doing the task was a bit challenging at first because I have never used WordPress before. However, I quickly learned to use the application and began to enjoy making the site.
