DIGI CITIZEN

Kela

I don’t use very often Kelas websites, but we use Kela’s benefits. I have two boys and therefore I get child benefit every month from Kela. Kela pays child benefit for each child who is permanently resident in Finland. Child benefit is tax-free income. (Kela, publishing time unknown.)

I also have Kela-card (Personal health insurance card) which allows me to use Finnish social security systems services. Kela card is to everyone covered under the Finnish social security system. Kela card is free. Kela cards owner is under the National Health Insurance and therefore can get medical treatments affordable prices.  When I was searching information about me and my boys, I ordered European health care card for the upcoming vacation.

Oma Kanta

Oma Kanta is familiar to me, because I time to time check my laboratory results and print documents for vacations. I like Oma Kanta because you log in through bank identification, and it’s very simple to do. (Oma Kanta, publishing time unknown.)

Keva

It was interesting to investigate my own information at the portal. My current retirement age is 67 years and Keva recommends me to work to age of 69. So, it would be better retire age of 69 than for example age of 68. If I want to retire part time, it could be possible when I am 64 years old. So therefore, I cannot retire age of 63. Online shopping

Online shopping

I use weekly digital shops and would describe myself as a heavy user. When it’s possible, I order on online. Why? Because it’s easier than to go shop and you can place order 24/7. Mainly I shop food, clothes, and furniture. I used to use a lot of Amazon, but now I do decentralized shopping. Amazon-app is great way to do purchases, but I don’t like how product search works. Ebay is also familiar to me. Usually I buy on Ebay Kids party decorations and funny outfits. (Amazon, publishing time unknown; Ebay, publishing time unknown.)

If you want to sell product on Amazon, you have to be verified Amazon seller. Amazon is very strict what kind of sellers can sell on their platform. When you are going to start to sell on Amazon, you have to create Amazon seller account and fill all information. Some categories are open to all sellers and some require a Professional seller account, some require approval to sell. (Amazon, publishing time unknown.)

Digitalization and digital gap

Younger generation have lived whole their lives in digital world, and they can adapt easier to digitalization. What about older people? Older people have used to use telefaxes, paid their bills in banks. Today, almost everything is handled online. Today’s problem is that older generations engage with technologies various ways. Some are very keen to start using new technologies but some experience resistance. And this leads digital gaps in older generations.

So that we can avoid digital gaps, we should design technologies that speaks to the needs and requirements of older people. Research shows, that when you collaborate with older people during project, you can avoid digital gaps and speak the same language than older people. (Fischer, Östlund, Dalmer, Rosales, Peine, Loos, Neven & Marshall 2021.)

Digital Competence

I took digital competence test, and my results tells me that I am able to perform tasks and identify the most appropriate solutions when I am solving problems. It was very interesting to read my results and how I can improve my digital skills. When I did the test, I noticed that I have major gaps in basic matters. For example, I don’t know enough about how to handle technical problems.

Self-evaluation

It was inspiring to study more about digi citizen topic. I haven’t thought which all includes in this field. I was surprised that handling technical problems are skills what you must know.  I this task put me thinking what kind of skills we need in year 2040? How we millennials can handle then different kind of apps and digital maters.

Thank you Tiina for the beautiful blog. It was a visually pleasing and invigorating read. It seems that producing and maintaining websites is a familiar task for you. I’m just training on my own blog: https://blogi.savonia.fi/miial/
