My level of competence
who am i ?: I am Safalta Ghimire.I am from Nepal. I have studied diploma in nursing in my home country. I have done volunteering in elderly homes and hospitals as well.
What kind of learner am I?: I believe in learning by doing the activities repeatedly. I am always into knowing new things. I hope that I will get to learn about giving medication, taking care of elderly people, and providing them food, and basic care.
Professional competence and goals
Learning skills
Level of competence: I am almost done with my second semester and during this time period I learned different theories and did some skill lab as well. However, it is quite challenging to apply theory into practice but I need to pay attention to thinking about theory while carrying out the nursing procedure so that I will be able to improve in evidence-based practice. I hope I will be able to gain more knowledge in practice during my internship. I have some basic fundamentals of nursing skills in my country and I hope I will be able to implement that in my internship and learn more here as well.
How to achieve goals: my goal will be how to know and combine theory with practical, I will also try to think and need to pay attention to think about the things while carrying out the nursing procedures so that it will help me to improve it in evidence-based practice.
Ethical knowledge and professionalism
Level of competence: I am familiar with the nursing ethical guidelines and I will try to understand and implement them better while practicing. According to finish nurses association 2021, the nurse is responsible to encounters patients as valuable human beings, creating a nursing environment that takes into consideration the values, convictions, and traditions of individuals, respect the confidentiality, autonomy, and self-determination of the patient, and gives him or her an opportunity to participate in decisions. concerning his or her own care the relationship between nurse and patient is based upon open interaction and mutual trust. I know the principle and values of the nursing profession. I will be applying the knowledge in practice during my internship.
How to achieve goals: I have to learn how to act professionally at the time regardless of patient behavior. however, I know how to deal with difficult situations with a professional attitude. I want to become a good nurse with a professional attitude. despite patient behavior, I have to remain calm and handle the situations in a professional way. that is why I have to get involved in a variety of challenging situations with the patient and their family members and my co-workers to understand and help them to overcome their sickness.
Clinical skills
level of competence: I have participated in the skill lab in the school such as patient safety, first aid, personal hygiene, ergonomy, drug therapy, bowel and urinary elimination, vital signs, and ABCDE which is required for my practice and these are the required skills for the internship.
How to achieve goals: I want to take out all the knowledge that I have gained in my school during my internship and also I will apply the aseptic technique and guidelines while doing my internship. I will ask my tutor nurse to give feedback so that I can be better when doing the next procedure next time.
Teaching and guidance
Level of competence: During my study, I have studied how to guide patients and their relatives. I have also done some simulation and role play in my school to get real feelings and experience. besides language problems.I am familiar with patient safety.
How to achieve goals: I will try to improve where it is needed and try to learn as much as possible things from my mentor nurse and I will try to speak finnish language as much as I can.
Quality and safety of social and health care services
Level of competence: As a nursing student, I have learned how to ensure patient safety mainly during critical and emergency situations.
How to achieve goals: I want to be a nurse with skills, experience, and knowledge in patient safety.I would like to observe my tutor nurse and ask about patient safety such as prevention of medication error, unsafe surgical procedures, diagnostic errors, and so on.
Working community competence
Level of competence: I have the ability to work in a team and alone as well. I like working in a team. during the class, we have to do a lot of teamwork and it’s quite fun though likewise, it will be the same in my internship as well I have to know ow my work and responsibilities and follow the instructions of my tutor. although I feel like will have to face the problem with language.
How to achieve goals: I hope I will be able to improve my social skills, nursing skills, and time management. as well as language skills.

So you could make weekly targets and also daily targets. This will make it easier throughout the practice to realize your goals and help in driving the competencies home.
In this your first internship, you will get the firsthand experience caring for patients in Finland and this is an opportunity to get to orientate yourself with care processes and patient environment, perform basic hygiene care, support patients in their activities of daily living, and above all carryout nursing interventions. Take this advantage and develop your competencies, knowledge, and experience in nursing care.
