Mid Internship Evaluation
Learning skills:
During my internship, I try to always ask for feedback and I ask staff members what I can do next work independently. Every time I listen to feedback I try to apply it in the next opportunity.for example how to change diapers, keep privacy, and ergonomy(based on learning objectives) that I find very useful because they increase productivity.
Ethical knowledge and Professionality
Ethical aspects are very crucial in the workplace especially we are dealing with the elderly. we have to respect and keep confidentiality and always apply the four principles that are already thought are autonomy, beneficence, justice, and nonmaleficence, and when we check medical records, we have to ask permission from the nurse who is responsible for the patient.
Clinical skills:
Mostly, we help the patients in their daily activities(eating, bathing, changing diapers, changing clothes, making beds, washing clothes). There are some patients who use catheters, we have to make sure to change them if needed because it can prevent further infection, and it is very risky for elderly people if they got an infection it may lead to sepsis and threatening life condition. During our work, we always make sure to do with an antiseptic technique based on WHO guidelines(Doing a hand rub before we go to another room, washing hands if there is some dirt).
Teaching and guidance
most of the time we use the rehabilitative approach (we help them, but still we have to train them to live more independently than before because it is very useful for them). even though some of them have worsening conditions, but still we have to monitor and encourage them to do daily activities independently step by step. guiding the patient in the finnish isn’t really easy, sometimes they understand but sometimes they don’t really understand, in that situation, I ask some staff what is the correct way to tell them to do the things.
Patient safety and quality of social and health care services:
Safety is very important because they have a high risk to fall down. That is why helping them in daily activities is most important because we need to make sure that the patient is in the correct position. for example: after feeding, it is better to maintain the position of the bed to prevent gastric reflux, especially for elderly people because some the patient really get anxious so we need to take care of their position correctly. I also try to measure a blood glucose level properly and safely by using gloves and an aseptic technique.
Working community competence:
Teamwork is very important while working. that is why while doing something we need to tell others what we are going to do and plan so that others can know what actually we are doing and they can approve and distribute the work. in my internship placement, my colleagues were very welcoming so it became very easy for me to work. they teach me how to do stuff in a nursing home so that I can have lots of sources of learning which are very useful for me.
Conclusion:
This internship has been very useful for me because I can learn a lot of things. I have learned a nursing procedure that makes me very easy to implement while working with elderly people.I have also learned some basic Finnish although I still have to learn a lot.
Your internship went well and it’s accepted.
You worked actively and respectfully during the whole internship and learned new skills. It’s important that you understand the meaning of rehabilitative approach and patient safety. You always asked if there was something that was new to you and were interested in our residents patient history and situation. You know how to help patients with their daily activities. I’m sure that in your next internship you will start to learn more about medication care. Best of luck with your future studies!
