My second week of internship was completed after focusing more on the patients assigned to me from the start of my internship. These patients were suffering from low self-esteem, hallucination, substance abuse, ADHD and low mood. My goal was to promote the mental health of the patients, using nurse-client relationships to support their daily activities and know more about their medication plans and their effect. Luckily, I have established a good relationship with these patients from the first week of my internship.
Resident A is an ADHD patient and used to be a violent type, has taken drugs in the past and have difficulties in going to school. XYZ feels hallucinated after taking any medication except from Vitamin D.
My aim is to provide adequate support with patient daily activities and assist him going to school. The most challenging part is waking XYZ in the morning for school which seems difficult. In situations like this, I respect XYZ privacy, be patient, and discuss. Moreover, to help situations like this, I have noticed that family is very important for this patient. I always tell XYZ to make his parents proud by going to school regularly. Fortunately, my words stand as motivation and encouragement for XYZ. The patient requested me to come with him to his new school every Friday until the end of my five weeks internship which is fine by me. Similarly, I helped XYZ with school assignments and went on a walk together after school.
Personally, I noticed when young people test positive to substance abuse test and have ADHD, they don’t give ADHD medicine anymore. Therapies caring, HOJKS, sporting, weekly program, good sleeping routine, eating healthily and give close attention to support them are used to replace the ADHD medicine.
