I am a flexible learner who absorbs information best through a variety of methods. As a visual learner who learns best by writing and reading, I usually take notes or highlight key points in an interaction so that I can read them more and comprehend them better. However, I am primarily a kinaesthetic learner who learns best by doing, so I understand best if I am hands-on but first sit back, watch, observe, and act.
I would therefore require a mentor who directs me on what to do in practice so that I may connect my theoretical knowledge with practical knowledge, as I enjoy receiving and providing feedback to my mentor. I would like my mentor to be understanding of my initiative. I am very good at keeping track of time, and by the end of the internship, I hope to have learnt a lot about clinical skills and improved my ability to think critically, be creative, and work with others in real-world settings.
PREVIOUS TRAINING PERIODS.
First Internship: Nursing Assessment and Interventions Practice: Mantikampus, Maanisto, Kuopio.
Second Internship: Pediatric and family nursing practice: Paivaranta Paivakoti.
In my first internship, I learnt the basic knowledge and rudiment of Nursing. The second internship was more advanced while working with the young people. However, I used Feedback as a tool to gain as much as I did.
My first internship gained me basic Knowledge about Nursing, the second Internship was a bit more advanced and clinical. However, in both internships, I used Feedback as a tool to gain as much as I did. Since I have experience in the setting, this might not be all that different, and it’s a chance for me to improve my abilities.
PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE AND GOALS
ETHICS COMPETENCE
Level of Competence. The nursing profession has guiding and ethical principles which must be upheld. I understand principles such as Integrity, Human dignity, Autonomy, Beneficence, justice, accountability, fidelity, Nonmaleficence, and veracity. I have equipped myself with knowledge about the Mental Health Act and am optimistic about how my mentor guides me and uses this information practically.
Goals and how to achieve them. My objective is to practise nursing while adhering to these values, handling difficult patient circumstances professionally, developing empathy, maintaining my composure under pressure, and learning more about how to make quick and wise nursing-based judgements when things go tough. I anticipate that I will heed my mentor’s advice and be given the chance to experience such difficult circumstances to gain a deeper understanding of them.
EDUCATION AND TEACHING COMPETENCE
Level of competence: I have gained experience guiding patients and their families as well as exchanging ideas with other staff members and fellow students during my past internships; however, the patient guidance was aimed at general patients. I recognise the value of the nurse-resident relationship.
Goals and how to achieve them: I have the chance to learn how to precisely help someone who is struggling with mental health issues, and I must accomplish this goal by listening to my mentor’s advice and applying both the theoretical knowledge and my unit experience.
WORK COMMUNITY COMPETENCE
Level of Competence: In my previous internships, I made sure to know about the protocols of the unit, developed more of an understanding of teamwork, and worked as a team.
Goals And How to Achieve Them: I will work closely with my mentor nurse to familiarize myself with the requirements and established standards for managing mental health and drug misuse concerns, as well as specific medications in that sector, to operate effectively within the multidisciplinary team. In order to boost my confidence and sharpen my Finnish speaking abilities so that I can fit in well at the Finnish workplace, I want to engage with residents, their families, and other staff members more.
EVIDENCE-BASED NURSING AND DECISION-MAKING
Level of Competence: Mental Health and Substance abuse is a nursing area that is guided by evidence-based practice, Acts, and Laws which I have theoretical knowledge and understanding.
Goals and How to Achieve Them: I would like to make use of this theoretical knowledge in practice and to achieve this, I must relate the practice to my theoretical knowledge, as well as follow my mentor’s guidance to make better nursing decisions in relation to mental health and substance abuse in various concepts.
CULTURAL COMPETENCE
Level of Competence: I learned from my previous internship how important it is for nurses to collaborate with people from different cultural backgrounds. It entails being cognizant of and considerate of the ways in which cultural, ethnic, religious, and linguistic variations might impact an individual’s attitudes, behaviours, values, and beliefs toward mental health.
Goals And How to Achieve Them: I would like to practice whilst taking into consideration cultural beliefs and backgrounds, I would require my mentor to guide me and be actively involved in managing residents while upholding their cultural beliefs.
CLINICAL NURSING COMPETENCE.
Level of Competence. In my previous Internships, I learned to work aseptically and ergonomically. I understand how to search databases about various medications, I know how to perform subcutaneous injections and administer different forms of medication in the form of tablets while considering the 7 medication rights for example right person, right dose, right time, right drug, right route, etc. but i understand more nonpharmacological treatment is needed. My internship at Paivakoti has helped me to work closely with the young people.
Goals and how to achieve them. I would want to gain more knowledge in administering medicines that are given to mental health and addiction care patients. I want to learn more practically about occupational and patient safety in residents, strengthen my nurse-patient relationship, and improve my documentation skills. I hope my mentor guides me through this.
Conclusively, my level of competence has improved since my previous internships, and I have theoretical and practical nursing knowledge which provides a good foundation for me to succeed in this internship.

Hi Jamiu,
nice to read your clear description of the level of the competence. You have well described how to reach your goals and all this will be more concretic when you start your internship and talk with your mentoring nurse.
You´ll face the ethical questions everyday when you work in mental healthcare settings. Reflect and discuss about your thoughts and feelings with your mentors and teammates as well as write here on your blog.
Clinical skills on mental health and addiction care are quite different that in other nursing fields. Clinical nursing competence includes assessing, care planning, reporting, medication, tools of the motivational interview, being present, functional methods and all those methods you use with the clients. Nurse-client relationship is the biggest intervention so choose an own client to you for this 5 weeks period to train a nurse-client relationship. It´s good to make a little goal for your cooperation starting from the clients needs. What methods a client needs: supporting or motivational discussions, creative/functional methods or supporting daily living skills or socializing etc. Through this nurse-client relationship many goals of training also become more clear and true.
I suggest a mid-evaluation on 2.12. at 12. https://savonia.zoom.us/j/7447856482 If this time is not possible for you and your mentor, lets find better. Learn a lot and have fun!
