My first week of mental health and substance abuse internship started with introduction. I introduced myself to the staff and the residents. During the first week, I focused on different symptoms of mental health situation such as low self-esteem, mental unstable patients, ethics, collaboration between multi professional team to help the young people. I was given two clients for the 5 weeks internships. The goal is to create a nurse-client relationship, supporting daily living of clients, motivational discussions and many more.
We had a case study of young person with mental unstable symptoms. The young person was meant to be in school at klo 9 a.m but decided not to go to school at klo 8:00 without any valid reason. My mentor and head of the unit had a brief discussion with the young person which made the young person change her mind about going to school. In addition, the young person told the head of the unit that she is tired of life and everything around her. During the brief discussion, XYZ told my mentor that she will be going to school on one condition; without jacket and writing materials, these conditions were fine if she is in school. The head of the unit contacted XYZ school teacher and social worker to inform them about the situation. Similarly, I learnt about restraining techniques when clients are aggressive and angry. I intervene by calming the patient down from aggressive behavior and redirecting their minds to another activity to prevent further anger or harm.
Multiprofessional intervention helped the young person with school-related anxiety and its regulation. XYZ was able to participate in school, which increases his experiences of success. The young person gained boundaries amidst difficult emotions and is learning to act properly despite anxiety. As a nurse, we were able to intervene and help the young person because we understood their feelings and empathetic in our attitudes during and after every situation.
The attitude of the multiprofessional team towards the success of the young person is that the young person can succeed in doing things with support. XYZ gains experiences of omniscient and moves forward. This experience highlighted the importance of multiprofessional collaborations to support young people and the importance of attitudes and emotions in mental health and addition care.
