WEEK 2 REFLECTION

I feel good in the second week because i am more familiar with the patients, nurses and the environment in general compared to the first week. I managed to have friends among the patients and nurses in my first week. The good part of the second week was that, i did things i learnt in the first week independently such as bed bathing, checking glucose level, changing of diapers, changing clients clothes, preparing of beds and using ergonomics as much as possible.

I moved to the second part in my plans for the five weeks of internship which was vital signs and oral care. Therefore, i managed to measure patients blood pressure alongside my mentor in the second week but fortunately i measured the patient pulse rate with machine and manually. In the same week, i was able to learn how to take blood samples from patients and i managed to take 2 blood samples before the second week ended. During the second week, i did an evening shift with my mentor which enable me to see how the oral care is done in real life situation and i did as many as possible for patients in the second week. However, towards the end of the first week until second week, I have been giving medications to patients while giving them food. Hopefully, i will learn more about medications in the next coming weeks and how to administer them independently.

In addition to my knowledge, we had a patient with fistula stoma which i at least expect to meet at care home. My supervisor did well by telling me how this can be treated and dress, I personally believe i would be able to do this independently before the end of my internship.

Conclusively, the second week has increased me in knowledge and my confidence level by working independently. Lack of speaking more Finnish language has made it more difficult to communicate with the patients. My supervisor noticed this and wrote some Finnish word and command for me to study them independently.
