Week 2
My second week of internship came with a different experience entirely. I work as a substitute nurse for my mentor in the second week to enhance my nursing skills, I work mostly individually under the supervision of my second mentor. I was offered the opportunity to get my medication license which I passed at the internship place. Therefore, I was eligible to dispense medications independently after the medication exam. I encouraged my patients to use Vitamin D once in a day to help regulate the amount of phosphate and calcium in their body.
I did health checking (tervetarkastus) for the new patients who were assigned to me. Health checking involves checking the patient’s health history, allergies and asking health related questions. I checked the patients’ blood pressure, blood sugar and temperature level. Similarly, I gave health educations to the patients such as sex education, educate them about the importance of living hygienically. During the process of health checking, I noticed two of the patients need help with tooth care. I booked a quick appointment with the dentist at Kuopio health center, I supported the young people by going to the dentist appointment together, encouraged them to abide by the instructions given by the dentists.
After an excellent first week, I have managed to develop a good relationship with young people. They have started to trust me which enables them to discuss their traumatic experiences and worries with me. I create a self-instructor with young people every week. The self-instructor’s time is mostly an outdoor activity which involves bowling, walking, swimming and cycling. This is aimed at helping the young people from depression and mental stress and be able to do basic daily activities without stress. These activities have impacted positively on the young people.
I started documentation in Nappula which is quite different from PEGASUS which I am familiar with. The Nappula application has helped me develop my writing skills in Finnish language.
