WEEK 1 REFLECTION

Mt first week at the internship place was an interesting week for me. Firstly, I discussed my plans for the 5 weeks of internship with my mentor and how i intend to accomplish the plans on a weekly basis.

The first day the internship was more about introduction, I was introduced to the care home in general and all the necessary stuffs that would be needed throughout my internship period such as cloth and keys to the building. Similarly, I was introduced to the staffs at the place and i try to meet some of the patients briefly in the first day. On the same day, I was thought on how to feed patients who can not eat or drink themselves. I try to write down some important information and asked questions as much as possible if i feel unclear about something. Like i used to tell my supervisor, i am open to corrections when i make mistakes. I was a little bit shy at first but i managed to give food to different patient in my first day for breakfast and lunch. Also, I managed to move patients around through their wheelchair and move some of the patients to their rooms.

The second day, I managed to watch my supervisor bath for an elderly patient early in the morning. I took the bath for the second patient with the help of my supervisor, she guided me in the best possible way and she urged me to communicate in every process to the patients to make it more easy for me. I gave patients their medications while giving them food in breakfast and lunch time. On the second day working with my mentor, I learnt how to how to calculate insulin for type 1 diabetes.

I did bed bathing for about three patients on the third day with the help of my supervisor. Although, i made some mistakes during the process of bed bathing by not communicating with the patients, this actions made the patient little bit scared because they don’t understand what i was doing to them. Similarly, I wore the diapers in a wrong direction for multiple patients during the same day. Fortunately, my mentor corrected my mistakes and made sure i did it in a right way. Also, i managed to give insulin to type 1 diabetes patients with the help of my supervisor.

During the first week, I watched my supervisor take patient to sauna for bathing, before the first week ended, i was able to take bath for patient at sauna with the help of my mentor. While bathing or anytime i am with the patients, I make sure i act as a professional and keep their privacy private.

Summarily, the first week was interesting and a little bit stressful working in a new environment with some new faces. Fortunately, I manged to increase in knowledge by learning more about diabetes patients type 1 with insulin and type 2 with oral care, communication with the residents, bed bathing, hair combing for patients, shaving beards for elderly men and listening to reports from other nurses when they want to switch shift for afternoon worker. One of the positive experience with my supervisor is that, she advised me to work ergonomically as much as possible.
